Burvill

Burvill
This name does not appear to be recorded in any comparable spelling before the late 17th Century, suggesting that it is of Huguenot immigrant status. The name spelling appears to be an anglicization of the French-Flemish "Beauville" and this is possibly confirmed by the recording of Magdalen Beurzville who married Peter Levesque in 1765 at St. Boltophe Church, London. The "normal" English medieval version of the name is Beavill, Bevill or Beville, however their names derive from a much earlier and more violent French-Norman entry after 1066. Robert de Beville being recorded in the records of Ramsey Abbey, Huntingdon, c.1190. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Mary Burvile. which was dated 1692 (Married) Edward Darby at St. James, London. during the reign of William and Mary "The Joint Monarchy" 1689-1694. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surnames reference. 2013.
