Bryceson

This interesting name derives from the personal name Bryceson,(Latinized as Bricius). The name probably of Celtic origin, was borne by a 5th century Gaulish saint, nephew of Saint Martin, Bishop of Tours. The name was consequently popular in France during the early Middle Ages and in England and Scotland after the Norman Conquest. Bricius Judex, appearing in "The Register of Aberbrothoc Abbey", Scotland, circa 1189, is the earliest recorded namebearer in Britian. The patronymic forms Brisson, Bryson and Bryceson are particularly well recorded in London Church Registers from the late 17th Century, (see below). On June 24th 1741 Walter Bryson married Elizabeth Barnes in St. Aske Hospital, Hoxton, and on March 20th 1796, William Bryceson, an infant, was christened in St. Andrew's, Holborn. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Anthoine Brisson, son of Jean Brisson and Anne Vedel, which was dated August 31st 1690, christened in the French Huguenot Church, Threadneedle Street, London, during the reign of King William and Queen Mary, known as "The Joint Monarchs", 1689 - Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.1702.
