Wavish

Wavish
This very interesting name has had an unusual and rare development. It is a transposition and has been considerably altered by dialectual mis-spelling. We believe that it derives from the Olde French 'de Wavrin' or 'de Wavre' from Flanders and the Netherlands, an area much affected by the Huguenot movement, and the wars of the Spanish Succession in the 18th century. Many such names have been 'anglicized' - some more than others. The Coat of Arms is a blue shield charged with an inner escutcheon of silver among a seinee of eleven billets. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Johannes de Wavrin. which was dated C. 1680 Iertre, Brabant (Netherlands). during the reign of King William 111 of Orange and England 1689 - 1704. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surnames reference. 2013.
