Wadmore
This interesting surname of English origin is a locational name from the place called Wedmore in Somerset deriving from the Old English pre 7th Century "wap" meaning "hunting" hence "moor for hunting". The name is recorded as Wedmore in the Domesday Book of 1086. The surname date's back to the early 14th Century, (see below). Variations in the idiom of the spelling include Wadmor, Wadmire, etc. John, married Rose Farrington at St. Katherine by the Tower, London on September 9th 1622. Anna, daughter of Anna and John Wadmore, was christened at St. Dunstan, Stepney on September 16th 1657. One, James Wadmore (1782-1853) was a collector of objects of virtu, he was a land-surveyor. Alice, daughter of Emily and Henry Robinson Wadmore, was christened at South Bersted, Surrey on August 14th 1853. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Egidius de Wedmore, which was dated 1308, "Kirby's Quest, Somerset", during the reign of King Edward 11, "The Caertnafon", 1307 - 1327. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
