Tibbetts

Tibbetts
This interesting name is a dialectual variant of the learned form, (recreated from the French 'Theobald'), of the common medieval given name 'Tebald' or 'Tibalt' itself from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements, 'peudo', people, race, and 'bald' bold or brave. Tibb was a medieval nickname used for both men and women, and Tibbetts means 'son of Tibb', from the French 'petit', (tibb-(pet)it), meaning little. One Charity Tibbetts infant daughter of William and Mary Tibbetts at St. Giles, Cripplegate, London in 1715, also in London one Jarvis Sowley Tibbetts married Anne Browne at All Souls, St. Marylebone, in 1842. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Tybote, which was dated 1327 Subsidy Rolls Worcester, during the reign of King Edward III, The Father of the Navy, 1327 - 1377. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surnames reference. 2013.
