The origination is from pre 7th century origins, and translates as "The farm (tun) of the descendants or tribe (ing) of Tolk". This was a personal name which was formerly spelt Tola or Toll, the precise meaning now being lost. The surname is well recorded in the Cheshire and Lancashire area from the 13th century, with the first recording possibly being that of Simon de Torkinton, lord of the manor of Torkinton, in the charters of East Cheshire in the year 1225, and Thomas de Torkinton in the pipe rolls of the same county in 1357. The surname lost its French preposition of "de" in the 15th century, an example being Alexander Torkinton of Stockport, who was buried at the parish church in 1605. The surname is recorded in the diocese of Greater London from at least the 18th century with Mary Talkington who married James Bricksley at St.Georges Chapel, Mayfair, in 1750, and Elizabeth Torkington who married Peter Lefargue at the same church in 1774.
