Skelcher

Skelcher
There are many unusual features about this name. It is apparently job descriptive, however most unusually, the first recording is 18th Century which is extremley late, and it is almost entirely recorded in the Midlands Region. It is our opinion that the name is a development of the medieval German "Schleicher" meaning "a Scout", although it may be a derivative of Schleifer, a polisher of Armour. The name is strongly represented at Cubbington although in 1789, the name appears at Fenny Compton as Mary Scheltcher who married a Richard Reading on the 10th November. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Joseph Skelcher. which was dated 1746, Married Mary Flour at Cubbingtyon, Warwickshire. during the reign of King George II, The Last Warrior King, 1727 - 1760. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surnames reference. 2013.
