Naul
Derived from the Olde French "Noel", this interesting name is baptisimal and was given to a child born at Christmas, whilst Pascal, rare in England was the Easter equivalent. In the Poll Tax period, the name was taken as a surname. The original name development including Geoffrey Noel in c.1154, Rutland, and William Nowel, 1248, Huntingdon. The surname has generated a wide range of variant spellings through mainly dialectual distortion, including Naule (1573), St. Giles, London, Noale (1649), Nooile (1671), Naul (1756), Elizabeth Naul being baptised at St. Mary Whitechapel. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Noel. which was dated 1130, the London Pipe Rolls. during the reign of King Henry I, The Adminstrator, 1100 - 1130. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
