This is a genuine French Huguenot emigre name first recorded in England in the early 18th Century. There are several alternative spellings as shown. The origination however, is probably the Heraldic name "Morvillier" recorded in Picardy or "Marville" recorded in Dauphine. The name development and recordings in England include Marie Anne Marvault recorded on April 15th 1716, at the French Huguenot Tabernacle, Milck Alley, London, Anne Morvill who married Morris Williams at St. Anne's Soho on April 30th 1763 and Elizabeth Morval who married Richard Boulton at Sibson, near Leicester on June 14th 1763. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Morvel, which was dated 1701, christened at St. Dunstans, Stepney, London, during the reign of King William III of Orange and England, 1650 - 1702. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
