This unusual name is a variant spelling of the Germanic "Mainard", a personal name of the pre 7th Century built up of the elements "magin" meaning strength and "hard" - brave and strong. The name was a Norman introduction after 1066, its popularity ensurning a wide range of alternative spelligs including Meynard, Menard, Monard, Manard etc., the name development including Robert Mainard 1198, the Hampshire Pipe Rolls, Thomas Meinard, 1202, Lincoln, whilst Julian Manard was baptised on the 9th March 1543 at Harefield Church, London and Elizabeth Manard married Robert Brookes at St. Dunstans, Stepney in 1634. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Thomas Monard. which was dated 1634, married Discipline Hall, at St. Mary Alderny, London. during the reign of King Charles I, The Martyr, 1625 - 1649. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
