Moggan

Moggan
This interesting surname of English origin is a dialectal variant of the medieval female given name Mag(ge), a pet form of Margaret from the Latin female personal name "Margarita" meaning "Pearl", plus the diminutive suffix "an". The surname dates back to the early 14th Century, (see below). Variations in the idiom of the spelling include Mogan, Mogen, Muggan, etc.. Abigaill, daughter of John Muggan, was christened on August 8th 1614 at St. Nicholas, Cole Abbey, London. William, son of Hagard Mogen was christened in 1618 at St. Martin, Vintry, London, and Isabella, daughter of Edward and Ann Mogan, was christened on September 17th 1797 at St. Giles, in the East, Stepney. Sarah Mogan married Charles Boulgar at St. Anne, Soho, Westminster, on August 18th 1834. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Mog, which was dated 1328, "Kirby's Quest of Somerset", during the reign of King Edward 111, "The Father of the Navy", 1327 - 1377. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
