Lyngsted

This is an Olde English locational name which derives from the village of (now) Linsted or Lynsted near Taversham in Kent or from residence at a Place (stede) of Lime trees (Lyng). The place name is first recorded in the Roll of St. Augustines Abbey for 1247 A.D. and later in the Poll Tax Rolls of 1291. The spelling being "Linestede". The name development includes Elizabeth Linstead recorded at St. Pauls, Deptford in 1750 as marrying John Bennett, whilst John Linkstead another variant is recorded at Nettlested on December 30th 1781. However "Lyngsted" seems to be a modern spelling and is not recorded before 1800. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Richard de Lindested. which was dated 1273, The Hundred Rolls of Kent. during the reign of King Edward I, The Hammer of the Scots, 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
