Loosmore

Loosmore
This interesting name has Olde English origins, although amongst the surprising aspects is that the name holders (or at least a proportion) certainly derive either from Lismore Island off Mull in Scotland or the town of Lismore in Ireland. The name means 'the marsh of the wild boar' from 'Hlose' (pre 7th Century) and 'mor' a morass or marshland. The name recording includes Henry Loosemore who married Margaret Taylor at St. Georges Church, Mayfair on May 26th 1747, however their son John was christened on July 22nd 1750 at St. Andrews, Holborn and his surname shown as 'Loosmore'. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Lusmoore, which was dated 1584, christened at St. Margarets, Westminster, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Good Queen Bess, 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
