Loiterton

Loiterton
This very interesting name is of Olde English origins and derives from residence at a place of concealment or ambush. The original spelling was "Lutian" plus "Tun", the latter being a farmstead or probably a village. There are two recorded placenames with the "Lutian" prefix, the first being the village now called Lotherton, near Tadcaster in Yorkshire but formerly spelt "Luttrington" in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, and Lutterworth in Leicester. Lotherton or Luttrington lies on the edge of the Battlefield of Towton (1461) believed to be the site of the bloodiest battle ever fought on British Soil. The modern name spellings are Lotterington and Loiterton, both are rare. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Lotherington. which was dated 1602, St. Katherines by the Tower, London. during the reign of King William 111, of Orange and England, 1680 - 1702. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
