Antwis
This extraordinary and rare name is a transposed variant spelling of the Greek personal name "Anastacia" first recorded in the 12th Century. The name means "the resurrected one" and the surname development has included Anastacia de Shirbec, in the Pipe Rolls of Lincoln for 1188, William Anastasie (as a surname) in the Kings Rolls of Hertford in 1222. The modern name spellings include Anstee, Ansteys, Anstice, Anstis, Anstiss, Antiss and Antis and Antwis, early examples being Elizabeth Antiss, christened at St. Mary le Bone Church, London on May 6th 1810 and John Anstis, and John Anstis, the Fines Court of Norfolk in 1717. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Allen Antis. which was dated 1634, Baptised at St. Martins in the Field, London. during the reign of King Charles I, The Martyr, 1625 - 1649. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
