This rare and interesting surname is ultimately of Hebrew origin, from the personal name "Laban". The given name originated as a byname, deriving from the Hebrew "laban", white, and would have been given to one with white hair or a fair complexion. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Labin, which was dated December 25th 1600, witness at a christening at St. Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, London, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, known as "Good Queen Bess", 1558-1603.
