Recorded in a variety of spellings including: Hillam, Hillum, Hilem, Hillan, Hillen, Hillin, Hilling and the dialectals Ilam and Illem, this is an English locational surname. However spelt it probably originates from the village of Hillam, near the town of Pontefract, in the county of West Yorkshire. The name means "of several hills", which is correct as the village does occupy several hills. The place name is first recorded in the famous Domesday Book of 1086 as "Hilum", the surname being later.
