This very interesting name is job descriptive and derives from the Olde pre 1066, Norman Invasion French, "Enfermerie" - meaning "a worker at the (Monastic) Infirmary". The name development has included William de Enfermerie c.1150, the Rolls of Durham Priory, Robert de la Fermeria, 1203, the Pipe Rolls of the County of Leicesters, William del Fermere (1301, the Yorkshire Pipe Rolls) and Geoffrey ate Fermerie in the Pipe Rolls of Sussex in 1327. A Coat of Arms is recorded for the variant spelling of Farmory of Lincoln c.1500, whilst John Farmery (deceased 1590) was an early eminent Physician. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert Firmarie. which was dated 1366, The London Name Register. during the reign of King Edward III, The Father of the Navy, 1327 -1377.
