Egginton

Egginton
This surname is of English origin. It is a locational name either from Eggington, a chapelry in the parish of Heighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, coming from the Old English "aecen - dun" meaning "oak hill" or "Ecca's hill", or, the parish of Egginton, near Burton, Derbyshire, meaning "the Tun(farm) of Ecga or his people". Variations in the idiom of the spelling include Egginton, Egentan, Eginton, etc.. Recordings include one Ann Egginton who married Hugh Miller in 1662, at Saint Bartholomew the Less, London and Elizabeth Eggington was christened on the 12th December 1675 at St. Giles Cripplegate, London. Anne Eginton married William Wisdom on the 8th December 1683 at St. James, Clerkenwell, London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Oliver Eginton, which was dated 1561, christened at St. Peter, Derbyshire, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, known as "Good Queen Bess", 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
