Eydel

Eydel
This name possibly derives from the name Eitel, itself deriving from the German "itel" meaning "only", "purely" or "simply". Eytel, Eydel and Eddolls are variations on the original personal name, with the latter Eddolls being patronymic i.e. "the son of Eydls". It may also derive from the Welsh personal name "Ithell" recorded in the Hundred Rolls of 1273, "Ithell Wynne" and becoming a surname in the late fifteen hundreds - "Thomas Ithell, rector of Emneth " Norfolk (1573). Ithells, Iddols and Eddols, being the modern patronymics, the substitution of "d" for "th" is a pronunciatioal corruption. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Richard Vawcill, married Frances Iddoll. which was dated 1620, in the "London Marriage Licence Records". during the reign of King James 1, and V1 of Scotland, 1603 - 1625. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
