Broxap
This is a locational name of Danish-Viking origin and derives from the village of Broxa in the North Riding of Yorkshire or from residence by a Marsh. There are several variant spellings but all have the same essential meaning of 'A Marsh' - from Olde Danish pre 8th century 'Brok'. The most usual spelling of the name is Broxholm and all early recordings are based around this spelling. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Charles Broxam which was dated 1570, Married Ann Lawghton in London during the reign of Queen Elisabeth I, Good Queen Bess, 1558 - 1603 Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
