Bodega

This most interesting surname is of early medieval Spanish origin, though ultimately of Greek origin, and is a metonymic occupational name for someone who worked in a wine cellar or a bar, from the Greek "apotheke", Latin "apoteca", wine cellar, from which the Old Spanish word "bodega", with the same meaning, derived. Bodega in the modern sense can mean restaurant, storeroom or a bar. The surname is cognate with the German surname "Bottcher", an occupational name for a cooper, from the Middle High German "botecher", a wine barrel, which is derived from the same Greek or Latin elements as mentioned above. Variants of this surname include Botticher, Bottger and Bittcher, while it is also cognate with the Low German names Bodeker, Bocker and Badeler. Anna V. Bodeck was baptised on April 12th 1586, at Frankfurt am Main, Hessen-Nassau, Germany. Francisca, Adolfo and Clara, children of Ambrose and Cristina Bodego were christened at El Salvador, Valladolid, in Spain, on September 27th 1861, August 3rd 1863, and August 13th 1865, respectively. A Coat of Arms depicting a profile of a bust of a turk proper, in silver robes with red braiding, with a silver turban pierced with a silver arrow, was granted to a Bodecker family in 1578, in Prussia, and later to Bodecker families in Oldenbourg and Russia. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Bonaventura V. Bodeck, which was dated August 13th 1512, baptised at Thorn, Westpreussen, Germany, during the reign of Emperor Maximillian 1, Holy Roman Emperor, 1494 - 1519. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax.
