This interesting and unusual surname is a patronymic of Trigg which is of Old Scandinavian origin, and is from the Old Norse byname "Triggr", trustworthy, faithful. This name is similar to the English name Trow, which is from a nickname for a trustworthy person, derived from the Middle English (1200 - 1500) "trow(e), trew(e)", faithful, steadfast, from the Olde English pre 7th Century "treowe". The name was probably introduced into England by the Scandinavians in the 7th and 8th Centuries. The personal name was first recorded as "Trig" in the Records of the Templars in England in the 12th Century at Yorkshire in 1185. The surname development since 1202 (see below) includes the following: William Trigges (1279, Cambridgeshire) and Ralph Trigge (1332, Lancashire). The modern surname can be found as Trigg and Trigge, with Triggs being a patronymic. Among the Church Recordings in London are the marriages of George Triggs and Agnis Stonner on January 15th 1615 at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, and of James Triggs and Anna Dillian on November 3rd 1662 at St. Benet's, Paul's Wharf. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Trig, which was dated 1202, in the "Assize Rolls of Lancashire", during the reign of King John, known as "Lackland", 1199 - 1216. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax.
