Titherington

Titherington
This is an English locational name from Titherington, also spelt Tytherington, a township in the parish of prestbury in Cheshire. The name is derived from the Olde English elements "Tydringtun". "Tun" meaning a farm or settlement, 'ing' meaning the family or eldest son and the personal name Tydr. The name Titherington may therefore be interpreted as "the farm of the eldest son of Tydr". In the modern idiom the name appears as Titherington, Titterington and Titrington. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Jordan de Tyderinton. which was dated 1291 - East Cheshire. during the reign of Edward I, The Hammer of the Scots, 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
