Sudlow

This is a locational name which derives from residence 'on the south hill' (Olde English pre 7th century) 'Suo-hlaw' or from a former village which is no longer extant in Cheshire. That the village did exist is shown by the recording of Thomas Stubbs of Sudloe in the Parish of Rawsthorne (The Wills Register of Cheshire 1638). The name development has included William Sudlow of Great Budworth, a husbandman (1638) and Robert Sudlow who married Catherine Wordsall at St. Georges, Hanover Square, London in 1763. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Sudlow of Witton which was dated 1593 the Cheshire Wills Register during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I Good Queen Bess 1558-1603 Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
