Sutty

Sutty
This name, with variant spellings Sutty, Syddie, Sidey, Sudy etc., is of Scottish locational origin either from Suddie in the parish of Knockbain in the Black Isle or from Suthie in Perthshire. The name, in both cases, is believed to derive from the Old English pre 7th Century 'suth' meaning 'south', or the Old Norse 'suthr', southern, plus the Scandinavian 'ey', an island, or piece of firm land in a fen. The surname was first recorded in the early 14th Century, (see below). One, Nicol Syddie was reidare, (a reader in minor orders) at St. Bothans in 1574 and a George Sutie was recorded in 'The Edinburgh Marriage Register' in 1609. James Suttie was a member of the Scots parliament for Forfar in 1617. On November 17th 1710 John Suttie and Catharine Dowglas were married in Abernethy, Perthshire, and on May 16th 1725 Isobel Suttie married Andrew Luke in Inchture, Perthshire. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Richard de Sudy, witness, which was dated 1316, - 'The Dunfermline Register', Scotland, during the reign of Robert the Bruce of Scotland, 1306 - 1329. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
