This interesting surname of English origin is a locational name from Shipperbottom in Lancashire, deriving from the Old English pre 7th Century "scepwoella" meaning "spring where sheep are washed" plus "boom" valley. Alice Shufflebotham married William Greenhaulgh on December 26th 1692, at St. Peter, Bolton Le Moor, Lancashire. Thomas Shufflebottom married Mary Fowler on April 29th 1734, at the Cathedral, Manchester, and William, son of John and Dorothy Shufflebottom was christened at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster on November 25th 1750.
