Sallows
An Olde English pre 8th Century locational name which has developed several modern spellings. The name Sallows comes from the Olde English 'sealh' meaning 'sallow' or 'willow' and can be further extended to 'one who dwells by the willows'. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Nicholas de Sallowe. which was dated 1254 - The Hundred Rolls of Shropshire. during the reign of King Henry 111 nickname - The Frenchman, 1216 - 1272. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
