- Muckersie
- This interesting Scottish name is locational and originates from an area, formerly a Parish and known as "The lands of Muckersie at Forteviot", near the city of Perth. The recordings of the surname are quite rare, a situation which is not uncommon when referring to locational origins which, for whatever reason are now "lost" or now longer in use. The name Henry Muckarsie, a merchant in Edinburgh in 1655, whilst Joane Muck-Arsie is recorded on June 29th 1718 at St. Sepulchres Church, London and on May 5th 1782, John Muckersie married Charlotte Smith at St. Leonards Church, Shoreditch. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Henry Muckarsye, which was dated December 31st 1626, witness at Scone, Perth, during the reign of King James VI of Scotland 1587 - 1625. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
