This Scottish name is probably locational and may well derive from the village of Minto in Roxburgh. As Minty or Mintie the name probably means 'the son of Minto', the first recorded holder being accused of the murder of Walter Mathie, but was released - not proven. The name is recorded as Myntie (1632) and Margaret Mintie (1663) was excommunicated for breaking the Seventh Commandment and George Minty was killed at Cambrai in 1917. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Andrew Myntie. which was dated C.1609, The Sheriff Court of Aberdeen. during the reign of King James V1 of Scotland and James 1 of England 1603 - 1625. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surnames reference. 2013.
