Ibbs

Ibbs
This is a baptisimal name with two possible origins. The first being 'the son of Isabel' from the pet form of the name - Ibb, with an initial 'h' added. The surname also appears as Ibbs in the modern idiom. The second possibility is that the name means 'the son of Hubert' - popularly Hibbert, whence the nickname Hibb, and the patronymic Hibbs or Hibson. One, John Hibson is recorded in Yorkshire (1442). The form Hibbs dosent appear until 1762 when one, Samuel Smith married an Ann Hibbs in St. George's Church, Hanover Square, London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Adam Ibbe. which was dated 1334, in the Court Rolls of the Borough of Colchester. during the reign of King Edward 111, known as the Father of the Navy 1327 - 1377. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
