Hyndley

Hyndley
An Olde English locational name which derives from the village of Hindley in Lancashire or Hiendley in Yorkshire, or from residence at a fenced enclosure which retained the deer (hind-leah). There are at least four modern spellings including Hindley, Hundley, Hindeley and Hyndley, whilst the name development has included Robert de Hindeley (1243 the Durham Assize Court), John Hyndeley (1340 the Guild Registry, Coventry), whilst Adam de Hindele held two bovates of ancient feofment in Lancashire. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Adam de Hindele which was dated Circa 1170, in the Pipe Rolls of Lancashire. during the reign of King Henry 11, known as the Builder 1154-1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
