Hasnip

This is a rare and interesting name which has an obscure origin. The original spelling suggests that the name is Olde English topographical and describes one resident at the 'Haesnep' - translating as 'the low lying enclosure in the brushwood'. However it is also possible that the name is literally descriptive and means 'one who has nothing' - medieval 'has nupp' - a northern expression. The name development includes, 1591, Margaret Hasnepe (as spelt) married Henrie Hilton at St. James Church, Clerkenwell, whilst in 1816 Lewis Hasnip is recorded at Coningsby Church, Lincoln. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Thomas Hasnupp. which was dated 1591 (Baptised) St. Mary Magdalene, London. during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 'Good Queen Bess' 1558-1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
