Gouldbourn

Gouldbourn
This is an original Lancashire location name from the village of Golborne in the parish of Winwrick. As such it means "the man from Golborn". The derivation of the township name is from the Old English pre 6th Century, "stream where marsh marigold grew". Baines "History of Lancashire" contains the folowing: "In the reign of KIng Henry III, Thomas de Goldbur held of the King the third part of the fee of one Knight, and William, the son of Hamo, held three borates, in Goldburn of the gift of Augustine, father of the said Thomas". The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Richard de Goldburn. which was dated 1332, The Subsiduary Pipe Rolls, Lancashire. during the reign of King Edward III, the Father of the Navy 1322 - 1377. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surnames reference. 2013.
