Chidzoy

Chidzoy
Found recorded as Chedzoy, Chedzey, Chidzoy, Chedsey etc., this very interesting name derives from the ancient village of 'Chedesie' now recorded as Chedzoy but first appearing in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles of 729 A.D. The surname translates as one who was resident at Cedd's Island from the Olde English personal name 'Cedd' a former tribal name from 'the Cedd people'. The name development has included William Chedzoy or Cheadsey who was a christian divine in his native Somerset (1510-1574), Grace Chidgey (1778 London) and as George Chidzoy also in London in 1849 at St. Margaret, Lothbury. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of John Chedsey. which was dated 1273 The Pipe Rolls of Somerset. during the reign of King Edward I 'The Hammer of the Scots' 1272-1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
