Derived from the pre medieval French "Escourre" or "Escurer". The surname is either a military description for a Scout or it can be job descriptive for a person responsible for the cleaning of Arms and Armourer. The surname is a Norman Introduction after 1066, the modern spellings are usually Scorah, Scorer, Scorrer and Schorah, whilst the name development includes Alice la Scoriere (1327, Essex), Willelmus Skorer (1379, Yorkshire), Sussana Scorer (1603, Dewsbury) and Thomas Scorah (1655, Doncaster, Yorkshire). The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William le Scorur. which was dated 1297 in the County Pipe Rolls of Yorkshire. during the reign of King Edward 1, known as the Hammer of the Scots, 1272 - 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
