Muggleston

Muggleston
Recorded as Muckleston, Mugliston, Mugleston and Muggleston, this is an English surname. It is locational from either of the two villages and parishes of Muckleston in the county of Salop or Shropshire. The villages were recorded as Moclestone in th Domesday Book of 1086, and according to the Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names, the meaning is 'Mocle's settlement' from an Olde English personal name 'Mocle or Mocel' However as Mocel is probably a form of the word 'mickel' meaning large, and we believe that the meaning is probably the large settlement. Locational surnames are usually 'from' names. That is to say names given to people as easy identification, after they left their former homes to move somewhere else. In this case the surname is apparently first recorded in the register of the university of Oxford in 1592, with that of Edward Mucleston of Shropshire. A second recording in the same register was in 1601 with Richard Muckelleston, also of Shropshire and presumably related to the first named. In London in 1675 we have a different form with Anne Muggleston marrying John Goldwell at St James Westminster, and in 1677 in Canterbury, Kent, that of Willliam Muglestone who married Elizabeth Bookham.
